January 13, 2017. Day trip to Mexico!

CAMPGROUND: Another night at Turquoise Valley RV park.

LOCATION:  South central Arizona about 400 yards from Mexico border.

WEATHER:  Sunny. Highs in 60s

We drove into Naco, Arizona and parked the car.  Then, we strolled across the border to Naco, Sonora.  Mexico immigration has a green light/red light system.  You hit the button, and if it is green, you just go through.  I pressed it, and it was red, so the border patrol asked me to open my purse, wished us a "buen dia", and gave us directions to the best taco place in town. Easy-peasy.

Lots of Americans do what we are doing....walk across the border for cheap medicine and for dental appointments.  So, our first stop was a pharmacy.  Pharmacies and dental offices line the one Main Street.

We ended up going to do pharmacies in order to buy everything that George needed.  Then to a dentist for George do get a cleaning.  He had done this last time we were here, and had had a good experience.  We went to two dentists that were too busy to fit him in.  The town's water supply was on the fritz and the third one couldn't see him as their machine was powered by water.  The fourth one was able to see him immediately.  Here, the dentist, not a dental hygienist, does the cleaning and check-up.  This one was quite jovial.  Since the water spigot was not working, he filled a whisky shot glass with water and jokingly told George to spit with whiskey.

That accomplished, we went searching for a restaurant that had been recommended.  We ordered a dish called huaraches, which means sandal. It is called that because it is made with a long thin tortilla.  First we were served (free) chips and numerous salsas.

Then came our order of huaraches.

This huge meat/cheese/lettuce covered entree plus the chips and 2 beers for less than $8!

Next stop was the tortilla factory where we bought a huge bag (the smallest size possible) for less than a dollar.  Then to the super Mercado to buy limes and avocado.  They cut the seed out of the avoacado to comply with US customs regulation.

Final stop was a barber shop where George got a haircut for $5.  We talked with the barber who is actually a US citizen but chooses to live here.  There are lots of people like that.  They say it is a better life, cheaper and calmer.  Why do we need that wall?????

A very successful and fun outing today.  The US customs joked with us about our purchases, and whisked us through.

Back home, we went to the RV park's bar and grill where a country music band was playing.  The bar is the "19th hole" of the golf course, and overlooks a putting green.

The band was quite good.  The median age of these band members was probably about 80.

We didn't stay long, as I can only stand country-western music for a short bit.     DINNER:  I lied!  I had one more dinner left from the chicken rotisserie we bought several days ago.  There were two more portions left of the chicken pasta dish I had made the other night.  Enough chicken for awhile!
