August 23, 2017. Touring northern Haida Gwaii

LOCATION:  Masset, Haida Gwaii, British Columbia WEATHER:  Mostly rainy with moments of sunshine. High about 65   We had a delicious breakfast in our cute B&B, then read/chatted in our living area.  We planned our day, and off we went.  Our first stop was in Old Masset, the Haida Gwaii reservation.  It is quite depressing with many abandoned houses.  We visited a native cemetary.  It was so interesting.  They take great care in decorating each one differently.  This one has huge scallop shells and abalone rocks on its top.
At the entrance, there is a small totem pole and this sign saying.... 'We remember our ancestors who died from epidemics and those whose remains that were taken from our land".

Then, we shopped in a Haida art gallery.

We drove to another village where we planned to hike.  We tried to find a restaurant, but the only thing available was some soup in their gas station. A bit sad.

The hike was beautiful, with beautiful ancient trees.  It is called the Golden Spruce Trail with its spruce trees being the center of a popular Canadian book.

We walked out to the pier in the little town.  We watched some crabs and jelly fish in the clear water.

Someone has hung these interesting bird houses....

Along the highway is a bench and statue marking a good place from which to hitchhike.

Back at our B&B, we walked around our harbor.  Here is Tony admiring this fisherman's halibut...

The sun came out and we gathered around a fire on the deck.

DINNER:  We shared a rotisserie chicken and Caesar salad out on the deck.
