August 15, 2017. Beautiful Okanagan Valley

CAMPGROUND:  Silver Star RV Park.  4 stars out of 5.  Full hook-ups, swimming pool, clean bathrooms.  Most guests are seasonal or here for 1-2 weeks.  Right off the highway.  Fire pit and picnic tables (although there is a fire ban).  Expensive at $40 US

LOCATION:  Vernon, British Columbia.

WEATHER:  Smoky.  Highs in 80s.

We said goodbye to Hell's Canyon RV Resort at about 8:00 AM.  They certainly have been nice.....with a very clean and pretty RV park, and letting us store the Air Stream in their adjacent parking lot for about 6 weeks for only $20.

The landscape for several hours was massive golden yellow wheat fields.  Some farmers were out harvesting their fields with huge equipment.  Gradually, we hit some pine trees and more rugged geography.  Then, barren land again except for fields near the rivers obviously nicely irrigated.

We crossed the Canadian border with no problem.  The Canadian border people are so much nicer than their US counterparts.  We joked that we might not return to the USA - such a sad state of affairs there.

As soon as we crossed the border, we stopped at a welcome station to ask about road closures due to forest fires.  They told us the best route to take.  We had previously thought we would have to go via Banff and Jasper, a bit out of our way, but this morning learned that there are some fires near Banff.  So, we took a more westerly route.  From the border, we now know which highways to take from here.

This lush valley in British Columbia is the Okanagan Valley.  It is like the Napa Valley of Canada with fruit trees and vineyards for miles and miles.  The highway is lined with fruit stands and wineries.  We stopped at one stand and bought beautiful cherries, blueberries, and peppers.

Unfortunately this area is very popular and tourists (Canadian mostly) were packing the tourist towns.  We drove through one town where hundreds of people were tubing down the river.  The highway traffic was stop-and-go for about 2 hours..   We followed lake after lake.  It is just gorgeous.  We ended up driving farther than we had planned = about 400 miles as we were trying to get away from the crowds.

We checked out one provisional park campground, but it was full.  Then, we went down another highway advertising an RV park, but couldn't find it.  Driving on, we finally found this one.  We have a beautiful spot, right on a lake.  We watched the sun set and relaxed after a long day on the road.

DINNER:  Needing to use up some of the elk burger, I made spaghetti  with meatballs.
