August 22, 2017. First day in Haida Gwaii

LOCATION:  Copper Beech B&B in Masset, Haida Gwaii, British Columbia

WEATHER:  Unfortunately, rain most of the day.  Highs about 60

The ferry departed at 10:00 PM last night, right on time, and we arrived in Haida Gwaii exactly on time at 6:00 AM this morning.

These maps show where Haida Gwaii is.  It was fomerly called Queen Charlotte Islands but has been renamed to honor its First Nation residents, about half the population.

It was pitch black when we disembarked, so we killed some time eating breakfast.  Then, we drove around the island.  We are on the northern island; the southern island doesn't have too much civilization - mostly just the national park.  They call this the "Galapagos of the North" as there are many unusual species of trees and foliage. We saw a big bear along the road!  Of course, the photo did not turn out - just a big black blob as he slipped back into the forest.  We saw lots of eagles...

And many many deer.

Many of the homes and shops here have totem poles,  This one in front of a house....

And this one in front of a campground....
W
We are staying at a darlin B&B right on the harbor.
We rested in the afternoon and walked to a bar and grill for Canadian pizza for dinner.
