December 15, 2016. First day housesitting in St. Thomas

LOCATION:  Charlotte Amalie, St Thomas, US Virgin Islands

WEATHER:  Hot and sunny!  High 89

We walked around downtown Charlotte Amalie, a town of about 50,000.  The downtown area is almost exclusively duty-free jewelry shops.  The quantity is amazing!

Taxis and open-air buses called "safaris" pick up tourists at the cruise ships and bring them here.  This is a safari; they are everywhere.....

As you walk along the street, the vendors try to get you to come into their stores.  The good thing is that the shops are all open and the air conditioned air flows out to the street.  I was pretty hot, even at 9:00 AM!

The main street has cute alleys, some dating back to the 1600s, with more shops and cafes.

We ran some errands with our homeowner.  They are taking one of their dogs with them, and had to stop at the vet to get a travel certificate for him. We went out to lunch at a Mexican place with the homeowners and then dropped them off at the airport.     The homeowners have kindly loaned us their car while they are away. We went grocery shopping, then picked up the other dog, our charge, at the pet groomers.     Their home is located on a steep hill overlooking the airport below.  The view is wonderful.  After the sun went down, and it cooled off somewhat, we sat on the balcony and watched the sun set over the water.

DINNER:  I made an Asian stir-fry using up some of their leftover chicken and rice.
