September 9, 2016. Day 4 on the Oxford Canal

LOCATION:  Cruising on the Oxford Canal
WEATHER:  Partly cloudy.  Very windy.

The weather forecast is to turn rainy later today, so we sped up, from 3 mph to 3.5 mph.  We had a few issues.  One lock didn't close completely, so we almost got stuck in it.  Later, when we needed to make a sharp turn under a bridge, the wind blew us off course, and we had to maneuver ropes to get us straightened out.  We moored in a slot to fill our water tank, but the hose didn't work.  With this type of travel, one can't be impatient.

Our boat is very comfortable.  We have a nice kitchen, stocked with everything I need for cooking.

There is a small living room where we can set up a table for meals.  It has a fireplace which we haven't used.

There are 2 bedrooms and 2 baths.

We stopped for lunch at a pub that was shown on our map.  We couldn't moor near it, so hiked a ways to get there.  The pubs where we have stopped are comfortable, country pubs, many with gourmet food.  Here is Graham enjoying a pate and salad.

George with smoked salmon..,,

The boat goes so slowly that sometimes I get out and walk along the towpath, walking even faster than the boat's  speed.

We cruised all day.  We decided to moor in Oxford since we were closeby at about 5:00.  With the forecasted rain for later today and tomorrow, it will be nice to be moored and finished with outside duties.

Once in Oxford, we strolled around the neighborhood where the boat company is located.  Once a derelict part of town, it is now becoming upscale.  We checked out a few pubs.

DINNER:  Tonight we wanted to finish up all our leftover food, for our last day on the boat.  I made an omelette with everything in the refrigerator!

  2. I keep thinking of the Keeping up Appearances episode when Hyacinth rents a "yacht" and she ends up falling off.
